The Atkins diet really isnt a diet by definition. Of course many opt for the Atkins diet plan because they want to loose weight but its so much more than that. You wont just watch the pounds melt away; youll be enjoying a new lifestyle that will have you happier and healthier. Youll be thinner, be fit, have more energy, and feel less stressed.
The Atkins nutritional approach is a lifestyle choice that you will live for the rest of your life. There are four phases to the Atkins diet plan. Once you have reached your optimum weight youll move to the maintenance phase where you will spend the rest of your life and youll never ever feel like you are sacrificing. Its all about eating smart and its never about depriving yourself.
Phase I The Induction
This is the first phase in the Atkins diet plan and it is the most restrictive but for most people it lasts only a couple of weeks. The purpose of this phase is so that you can re-set your metabolism so it once again begins to burn fat as fuel rather than depending on the carbohydrates you are eating.
During this phase you are going to eat plenty of salads, and selected vegetables, as well as cheese, and meats. You can consider this phase a low carbohydrate diet if you like because you are going to be limited to 20 grams of carbohydrates.
Dont worry you wont feel like you are starving because your body is going to enter ketosis very quickly. This is when the body burns fuel much more efficiently by using your boy fat so youll loose your craving for carbohydrates. Plus you get to eat all kinds of delicious tasty foods.
Phase II Ongoing Weight Loss Phase
During Phase II you get to start adding small amounts of low carb foods back into your diet. Week 1 is 25 grams a day. Youll maintain that for a week or two watching how your body reacts. Then youll add 5 grams of carbs each day until your weight loss stops. At that stage you will reduce your carb intake by 5 grams a day and youll begin to see slow but steady weight loss. You can lose 5 to 8 pounds a month and this is considered a healthy rate of weight loss.
Phase III Ongoing Weight Loss Phase
This is the phase where you begin to work on slowing down your weight loss because you should be approaching your weight goal. You can now begin to add up to 10 grams of carbs a day until you once again reach your plateau.
This is where you get to add some of your favorite carbs back into your diet just as long as they are in moderation. You can have a low carb diet in your life. There is no need for a no carb diet as long as you understand the balance that is necessary.
Phase IV Maintenance
Youve done it! Youve lost the weight you wanted to loose. Youre looking great and feeling more energized, more youthful, and just plain healthier. The maintenance phase is simply your commitment to a healthier way of life. You want a nutrient dense, low carb diet with plenty of water. Its not about counting calories or giving up foods. Its simply about balance. This is the most important phase of the Atkins diet plan and you will follow it for the rest of your life.
