Lower cholesterol naturally
Cholesterol has become a concern for many Americans, especially as they age and gain weight. Although weight gain isn’t primarily responsible for high cholesterol, there is a link between weight and high cholesterol. Now there is a way to take control of your cholesterol problem before it starts to control you. A natural supplement is recommended by some doctors, without the side effects you can get from prescription medication. Policosanol is a natural compound that has been derived from the sugar cane wax that has been shown to reduce cholesterol in both humans and animals. Through various studies it has also been shown to reduce the platelet stickiness that reduces blood flow and can possibly help with patients that have intermittent blood clots and Diabetes. Because this is a natural product without any toxicity it makes it more desirable for cholesterol then normal medication does. The safety alone of the product has people talking about it and trying it for themselves. It does lower cholesterol just as well as prescription medications without the side effects that can include muscle damage, diarrhea, constipation, fatigue, gas, heartburn, and headaches.

Medicines that are normally prescribed for high cholesterol are considered to be statin drugs. Statin drugs inhibit the enzyme called HMG-CoA reductase which goes to your liver to lower the cholesterol.  This can cause liver damage and other side effects in certain people. Policosanol shows no risk of liver damage in the numerous studies that have been done on this cholesterol lowering supplement. This is why natural health practitioners have been recommended this, especially to patients who are at risk for liver disease.

Originally Policosanol became popular in Cuba and has been used for quite some time now. The main ingredient, Octanosol, is also sold separately but it's not nearly as effective. It was the huge interest for this supplement in South America that really propelled studies to verify if policosanol is really as effective as natural practitioners thought it to be. Although there have been some debate on the effectiveness of policosano, most do agree that it does lower cholesterol efficiently in most people.

Policosanol is not recommended for women who are pregnant or nursing and because it has possible antithrombotic activity, and people who are taking the medications Warfarin or has been diagnosed with Hemophilia should exercise extreme caution in taking this product. Policosanol should also be stopped before having any surgery, especially major surgery because of the ingredients that can interfere with blood clotting. As with any medication, natural or otherwise, you should consult your doctor before trying policosanol.
