<p style="text-align: justify;">In fact, the study claims that you will be 51% more likely to develop depression if you consume fast food and baked goods. The study was published in the journal Public Health Nutrition and involved over 9000 individuals.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"> However, the study also noted that the many of these people also smoked, had less financial stability and exercised less. If this isn’t a recipe for poor physical, mental and emotional health, I’m not sure what is!</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">True, many of these issues can go hand in hand. As well, it’s important to point out that when a person is depressed, there is a greater chance they will turn to junk food. So, what’s the deal? Does fast food lead to depression?</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"> It’s impossible to ignore all the other factors involved, but the bottom line is, yes, fast food and all foods that are devoid of important nutrients and loaded with harmful ingredients can lead to poor moods.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Whether this manifests into clinical depression or not depends on other factors, but there are some definite physiological reasons behind junk food and a poor emotional state.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Keep in mind, we are not talking about the occasional indulgence. Eating a burger and fries on occasion will not deplete your emotions or your health for that matter. It’s what we do regularly, on a daily, weekly basis that affects our health.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"> If you are consuming a diet high in junk and low in important nutrients, you will become deficient in important vitamins and minerals.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Vitamins and minerals are imperative for emotional health because they are important cofactors in the production of pleasure inducing neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">They are also necessary components for enzymes, hormones and other functions in the body.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">If you become deficient in one or more vitamin or mineral, whatever you do take in or have stored will be prioritized for use in the most important functions, and production of pleasure hormones is not necessarily at the top of the list. Your moods will suffer.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">As well, vitamins such as the B complex vitamins (and many others) are important for the production of cellular energy. Deficiencies in vitamins and minerals will lead to a energy depletion. You may feel sluggish or fatigued most of the time, which most definitely depletes one’s mood!</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Fast food contains loads of harmful trans fats and is usually prepared with poor quality meat.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Unless you are consuming fast food from a specialty restaurant that uses organic meats, those burgers contain large amounts of arachidonic acid due to stressful conditions prior to slaughter.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Those stress hormones and the physiological responses in the cattle, chicken or pigs prior to slaughter will be transferred to your body. This too, can lead to poor moods and negative energy flow.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Emotional wellbeing involves good overall health – body, mind and soul – and because of this your moods will reflect the quality of foods you consume. So the next time you reach for junk food to solve a poor mood, you might want to reconsider!</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Stress may be causing your weight gain for a number of reasons, and once the vicious cycle begins, it’s difficult to reverse unless you are aggressive!</p>
<p>One of the first reasons stress begins to cause weight gain is a simple matter of mood and behaviors. When you are stressed, your mood may cause you to eat compulsively or eat for comfort.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Often, we crave sugary snacks when we are stressed because sugar raises serotonin (calming hormones) levels in the brain.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">It’s sort of a natural way to self-medicate, however mild the outcome, and unfortunately, this leads to one of the first portions of the vicious cycle.</p>
<p>When you eat sugar on a regular basis, your body becomes used to higher than normal levels of blood glucose and then begins to signal hunger earlier and earlier, meaning, you are now constantly hungry and usually, for more sugary snacks. It’s actually been found amongst lab rats that sugar is just as addictive as heroin!</p>
<p>So, there’s one area where stress can make you gain weight, and the other reason has to do with a stress hormone called cortisol. When we are stressed, our sympathetic nervous system kicks in and leads to the infamous fight or flight response.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">This has a couple of effects. For one, when the sympathetic nervous system is running on high, the parasympathetic system in charge of digestion and elimination slows down. This can lead to poor colon health, which can then lead to weight gain.</p>
<p>Secondly, cortisol causes an inflammatory reaction in the body. Adipose tissue releases inflammatory cytokines and hunger hormones such as ghrelin and decreases the effectiveness of appetite suppressing hormones such as leptin. It also reduces the function of hormones that burn fat.</p>
<p>Altering your diet to a more natural diet will help you combat the effects of stress and reduce inflammation. Be sure to include plenty of Omega 3 fatty acid sources such as fish and flax seed, or supplement your diet with a good fish oil or krill oil if you do not enjoy fish.</p>
<p>Above all, find ways of managing your stress levels. Exercises such as yoga can greatly reduce stress, reduce cortisol levels and help you lose weight!</p>

<p>Often times, a dietitian will recommend keeping a food journal to keep track of foods consumed as well as signs and symptoms that may be reactions to an allergy.</p>
<p>The goal is to detect a pattern with certain foods and then, one by one, eliminate them from the diet to see if the signs and symptoms disappear. If they do, you will then reintroduce the food and see if symptoms reappear to confirm your suspicions.</p>
<p>One of the biggest problems with an elimination and rotation diet is that it’s time consuming. Another problem is the diversity of potential food allergies along with the multitude of foods and food ingredients available. It can be a daunting task to monitor everything we eat and rule out literally thousands of foods and food combinations.</p>
<p>And then, you have the next issue. Many food allergies are delayed food allergies and your body has grown to hate these foods over time. You may not notice a change by eliminating a food for several months to a year.</p>
<p>The skin scratch test used by an allergist measures IgE antibodies, which have a short half life in the body. In other words, an allergy that prompts an increase in IgE antibodies is an immediate reaction.</p>
<p>Of course, these types of allergies exist, and some of them are quite severe such as an allergy to bee venom or peanuts that evokes anaphylactic shock or hives.</p>
<p>A delayed food allergy, on the other hand, may take up to a month to produce symptoms and therefore, the IgG antibodies that have a longer half life.</p>
<p>The signs, symptoms and responsive IgG antibodies may not show up for a month or more.</p>
<p>There’s only one way to accurately test for delayed food allergies and that is by using a blood test to measure IgG antibodies and run a panel to detect which foods are causing the allergy.</p>
<p>Once this has been determined, you can eliminate the foods and begin down a healthier path. Some common delayed food allergies are dairy, gluten, eggs and yeast; however, there are cases of delayed food allergies to many different foods or food groups.</p>

<p>Beginning an exercise program is often daunting because we have hard time scheduling the exercise and then, when faced with doing it, there are a million excuses to avoid the sometimes painful activity that seems like a huge commitment.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">These time-saving solutions will address most fitness issues by making your time spent on exercise more efficient AND they will encourage you to accomplish the exercises by lowering the actual commitment time.</p>
<p>10 here, 10 there…</p>
<p>Push-ups, chin-ups and abdominal exercises such as crunches can be the hardest exercises to face. 25 push-ups or chin-ups in a row? 50-100 crunches?</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">No thank you! Ouch! However, if you take time throughout the day to do maybe 5 in a row or 10 and then do 5 or 10 more later, you suddenly find that you can easily do 50 or more in a day! It will only take a minute or two to accomplish this making it far less daunting and likely that you’ll stick to it.</p>
<p>No cardio time? Do you have steps?</p>
<p>Running up and down the stairs is an excellent way to burn calories and firm up your legs and buttocks. Rather than doing this for a designated time, plan a set amount.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Depending on how many steps you have, you might strive for 5 trips up and down or 10 if you have a shorter staircase. Make sure you maintain control by only going as fast as you feel comfortable doing (and keep a hand on or near the railing). Stay on your toes and go as lightly as possible.</p>
<p>Multi-task Exercises</p>
<p>Push-ups and chin-ups are great examples of multi-tasking exercises as they exercise your upper body and core all at the same time. Loads of muscle groups are used when the exercises are performed properly.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Here’s another great multi-tasking exercise… the lunge/squat with curls/presses.</p>
<p>Using two low weight dumbbells (10 lbs or smaller), begin by standing with your feet shoulder length apart. As you press the dumbbells up, place one foot forward and go down into a lunge. As you come up from the lunge, lower the dumbbells to your shoulders and then down to your sides.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Squat down as you bring the dumbbells forward and as you stand up from the squat, curl the dumbbells upward toward your shoulders by bending your elbows and using your biceps. Now, press up and lunge with the other foot.</p>
<p>And keep going with the previous philosophy… do as many as you can in the time you have! Try a few more later in the day.</p>
<p>Before you know it, you’ll be ready to reveal more of you as the temperatures rise and your sloth-like winter regime will be our little secret!</p>
