 Acne affects 40 to 50 million Americans and is one of the most common skin conditions that afflict people at any age. Although 80% of the people with acne are between the ages of 11 and 30 years old, there are adults in their 30s, and 40s that also can get acne. Most acne is restricted to the face, chest, and back making it embarrassing for the people that have to deal with this on a regular basis. Most common cases of acne clear up on its own or respond to minimal treatment, but in severe acne it can leave a good deal of scarring. Although you can never be sure while you have the acne if it is going to scar but it is more common when you have inflamed cystic acne. Even with superficially inflamed acne it can leave scarring which leads to an aesthetic look that can be undesirable to the person who has it. Acne scars give an older look to your face and as the skin loses the elasticity that it normally has as you age it can look even worse.There are a number of treatments available to improve or even remove the acne scars. The depth and type of the scar greatly influences your choices of treatments. Dermabrasion is one of the most common treatments that can take care of shallow imperfections but costs about $1500 per treatment, with repeated treatments necessary sometimes. Another common but more expensive treatment is laser resurfacing. Again, it deals with mostly shallow imperfections but is quite effective in smoothing out the skin and giving you the appearance of no acne scarring at all. For the mild scarring that is deeper than just a surface scar but not as deep as an “ice pick” scars you can try a chemical peel. At an affordable pricing of $750 per treatment it is a way for most people to see a better look to their face and skin. For severe acne scarring that is similar to deep chicken pox scarring you should look into what is called “punch techniques”. It is about $50.00 per punch but it gives you a much more even appearance to your skin. The scar is “punched” out using a biopsy tool and then the skin is stitched back together giving you a small but mostly unnoticeable scar that dermabrasion can later remove for no scar at all. There is also customized at-home solutions that can help you get the gorgeous skin you desire as well. They are a fraction of the cost of a medical procedure but often take much longer with not as effective results.
