Others are used as a way to make the brew more effective. These steps require a lot of knowledge and experience and what makes the Chinese herbal doctor a professional at what they do. The better the doctor, the more potent the medication is. Traditional Chinese Medicine requires the use of balance and interaction of all the ingredients in the cocktail to make it a success. All patients are given the proper examination before the cocktail is made and each patient gets their own individual cocktail that is specific to their ailment. The ingredients often incorporate parts of plants, the leaf, flower, root, the stem, as well as ingredients from minerals and animals. Some of the controversy that stems from Traditional Chinese Medicine comes from the use of endangered species such as seahorses, tiger bones, and rhinoceros horns. Sheenong, a mythical personage, was the first herbalist in Chinese Tradition. He is said to have eaten hundreds of herbs and therefore was experienced enough to impart his knowledge of Chinese medicine to the common folk and agricultural people. The first Chinese manual that was put out on pharmacology listed 365 medicines. Out of those 365 medicines, 252 of them were herbs. The book, The Shennong Bencao Jing dated back to the 1st Century and was part of the C.E. Han dynasty. Now, more than 120 countries accept the traditional Chinese Medicine. Britain in particular opened more than 3,000 clinics that deal specifically in traditional Chinese medicine. Almost 2.5 million British people spend almost 90 million pounds per year to get a traditional Chinese medicine treatment. This includes Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, and massage. France also follows traditional Chinese medicine with almost 2,600 clinics and between 7,000 and 9,000 acupuncturists. In the Netherlands the number exceeds 1,500 with almost 15% of the total population receiving needle therapy. In the United States there are more than 20,000 acupuncturists and over 400 companies dealing specifically with the sale of Chinese herbal medicine. Acupuncture is becoming so popular that at least 40 countries have opened schools to teach the important and practice of acupuncture. The cooperation in traditional Chinese medicine is shown by the over 50 medical agreements signed between China and other countries. It is becoming increasingly popular and shows no signs of fading away. In fact over 26% of Chinas entire pharmaceutical section is funded by traditional Chinese medicine.
